Composting Center

Composting is an aerobic (oxygen dependent) degradation process by which plant and other organic wastes decompose under controlled conditions. As a result of the composting process, the compostable waste volume can be reduced from 50 to 85 percent. The finished product is a dark-brown substance referred to as humus or compost.

The cities of Texarkana, AR and Texarkana, TX have recognized the potential of composting, and therefore established a very unique and beneficial arrangement for recycling greenwaste.

Each year, the composting operation grinds approximately 200,000 cubic yards of greenwaste which is brought in by residents of the cities of Texarkana and surrounding area. This material is combined with biosolids from the wastewater treatment plant process to produce a class "A" compost which is marketed for use by the general public.
